Tessellations


Purpose:

To continue to demonstrate understanding of creating a positive/negative design, while adhering to specific boundaries;

To demonstrate creativity when given specific restrictions.


Steps:

  1. In class, you will design a shape for your tessellation. You have the choice of using the three-point or four-point technique. This will be explained to you in class.

  2. Your shape should be an organic form, no geometric shapes please.

  3. Your shape should be interesting and unique; please continue to think “outside the box”. See M.C. Escher's gallery of tessellations to get ideas.

  4. In class you will have time to explore different possibilities for your shape. It is recommended that you cut at least two shapes out and look a the shape of the negative space before you decide on a “final shape” to use for your tessellation.

  5. The teacher will provide you with 10 white 3” x 3” squares (you will use 9, one is extra) and one 9” x 9” black square.

  6. At home, you will cut the 9 white squares into the shape you created in class. Please cut carefully and as precisely as possible.

  7. You will glue your 9 shapes as accurately as possible, next to each other; all of your shapes should face the same way and barely touch on all points (this will be either three or four points).

  8. Upon completion, you will have a tessellation. All of your white spaces will be the same shape, facing in the same direction; all of your black spaces will be the same shape and facing the same way.

  9. Please remember, your completed tessellation should demonstrate creativity, along with high quality craftsmanship.
